sarah and caitlin got me thinking on this: there are a great many things that other people love that i just can't. CAN'T. tried. can't. these are a few:
1. indoor pets.
i think this is because i grew up with well over 50 outdoor cats which all died of not-that-mysterious causes {my dad shot them or my mom ran over them with the mini-van}, and two outdoor dogs--one of which my dad ran over with the combine {that was an accident; i'm not mad at him}, and one of which was constantly getting fleas or skunk-sprayed or swimming in the lagoon. so i guess i think of pets as dirty, and possibly rabid, and really, really short-lived because your parents are always killing them. and when i see pets inside of houses i think, in short, "YUCK."
2. paying for cable.
we already pay for the internet, and you can watch anything that you'd want to watch on tv, on the internet. including shows that aren't on tv anymore. whenever you want. for no extra charge. you all can pay for your 1000 channels, i'm going to watch sister sister on youtube. for "free".
3. violence in entertainment.
i used to love movies and tv shows that made me jump and scream and shiver and shudder. but i think that was back before i realized that most of those movies and tv shows are a little too close to reality--i mean, some of them are based on reality--who knows, maybe some reality is based on these tv shows and movies? "garbage in, garbage out." you know what i mean?
anyway, i guess it just freaks me out that someone's worst nightmare, something intensely personal and traumatizing, can be someone else's entertainment. it freaks me out that most people can watch certain movies and eat popcorn and laugh during certain scenes and walk out of the theatre pumped about how realistic the blood and guts were and how high the body count was. i saw a woman get hit by a truck a couple years ago, and i remember thinking afterwards how it felt like i was on the set of a movie. which, i think, is a strange thing to think when you're witnessing something so awful.
4. crowds for no good reason.
going to any event on opening night. big parties where i don't know anyone. cities where you're constantly elbow-to-elbow and everyone's glaring at everyone. music festivals or shows are my exception to this rule. but that's maybe because whenever you're listening to live music, it's kind of like there's only two people, you know: Audience and Band. you think that's cheesy. well shut up.
5. constant facebook statuses about "how blessed i am".
you know? like when people are all, "i am so thankful for _____! i can't believe how lucky i am to have ______!" every day. again, just my personal opinion. facebook statuses reach a lot of people, people from a lot of different places and stages in life. i have a friend who constantly posts statuses about how "oh! my husband just gave me flowers for no reason AGAIN you guys! what a romantic and thoughtful man i married!" i'm so happy for her, but i've unsubscribed from her newsfeed--and i can think of a bunch of our mutual single friends who probably have as well. don't get me wrong, i'm so happy in my marriage. we're just not the "flowers for no reason" kind of couple, and i doubt it's healthy to compare your relationship to anyone else's--but can you help it when you go to check your messages and there's a page-full of other people's bright shiny love for you to read about? brand new houses and beautiful babies and perfect-looking vacations--i don't care about the odd status, the occasional shout-out, and i love pictures and knowing how my friends are doing--but when i start turning green, the "unsubscribe to this user's status updates" is a wonderful tool, and i use it, even just for a week.
i could go on, but 5 seems like enough. i need to do the dishes. {this is something that i'd put on my list of "things that i like that others don't seem to love".}

I hate most of the items mentioned above, I really could care less how "blessed" someone's life is (that may make me a horrible human being but don't care).
Hmm, I don't agree with you on some of these, but that was the point right, duh. But I do agree with the FB thing, and the violence thing.
One thing I don't like that most people like, laying out in the sun. I like to relax on a beach and read, but I will always be under an umbrella!
I am SO with you on 1, 4 and 5...especially 5!

Ha. I like this, Suzy. What could I add to your list...maybe close walkers. You know those annoying peeps who walk WAY too close behind you on the street? Slow the F#$%#@ down or pass me, for the love of Pete! Annoying...
i like this. especially 2. 3. and 4. places with crowds always sound really fun, but once i'm at them i sometimes regret it. you're funny:)
The last one, oh god, braggers (and whingers) on Facebook - so many blocked from my news feed. Just flipping be normal. I posted a slight brag status on my /birthday/ for goodness sake, and felt a bit awkward about it. I am stupid.
Sister sister, oh my what a programme! "GO home Roger!" Haaaa.
And yes, Facebook is so annoying. Similarly, I hate the statuses that are like "need something good to happen in my life", "something else shit happened, just for a change" everyday. Oh my, I could rant about Facebook for a long while. I won't because I'm sure you know and agree with what I would say haha.
The movie thing!! I'm so the same! I used to love that torture porn stuff like Saw and House of 1000 corpses but somehow I became very sensitive to it. I guess I just actually thought about the things I was watching...like actually really imagined it. And suddenly it's not entertaining.
Same with guns and knives and swords...you know how in high school or whatever you might think having a gun would be so cool because you'd be the biggest tough guy? The other day I heard some teenaged boys talking about the types of guns they'd get and how they'd "home invade" some people (yes, they used home-invade as a verb) and I got actually kind of scared just thinking about it. Not cool at all, actually. They were just dorks who were trying to get attention on the bus but still.
haha, that's exactly the point! :)
i'm half with you on the sun thing. some days i crave & love it, some days i'm the one under the umbrella with 10 layers of sunscreen on.
indeed. 5 is probably the one that i think about the most. i don't know why people do it! it's one step away from, "i'm so thankful i'm a size 0! i'm so blessed to be this beautiful!"
EVERYONE: STOP IT OR I'M GOING TO BLOW UP FACEBOOK.
right?
for real!!! in the mall, i always manage to get a close walker who's going exactly where i'm going.
you should make a list on your blog! i like these.
haha it's true--the thought of it is so often much more fun than the actual event.
you should do one of these on your blog! love to read it. :)
hahaha "just flipping be normal."
good wisdom there.
:)
also: on your birthday, i'm sure the rules change a bit? no one can fault you for that!
THANK YOU. hahaha, i have the theme song stuck in my head now. :)
and yes, whining statuses are almost as bad/sometimes worse than bragging ones. so many things wrong with facebook, but it's just handy enough that i can't get rid of it!
nova!! i totally thought you'd be the one like, "i disagree with you, violence to the max!" BECAUSE YOU AND THAT CENTIPEDE THING!!! haha.
oh man. i will seriously never get over that.
but yeah--guns, teenage boys, home invading. shudder. this world is a creepy place.
Yes! Actually, my Facebook isn't like that (people I know are moany not braggy), but all the others.
That might sound weird because I have indoor cats, but they were never part of the plan - they just needed homes and people asked if we would have them. And then I saw photos and couldn't resist. I had always intended to wait until we had a garden.
And I absolutely, absolutely HATE gratuitous violence on or off screen; I have one friend who likes torture porn movies and I just do not get it. I don't. I know it's supposed to be cathartic, but how can watching somebody else (pretend to) get ripped apart in ever more imaginative ways make a person feel good? And, yes, exactly - garbage in, garbage out.
I'm a wuss with violence in movies/TV. And I'm one of those people who pays for cable, namely because we have a few shows that we like to keep up on, and Netflix takes FOREVER to get new episodes! But if we were hurting financially it'd be the first thing to go :)
I was talking with a friend the other day who said I should probably just join Facebook already so I could keep up to date with people and then everything she told me about Facebook just convinced me further that I am wise to not be on it! And your post just did the same! Facebook = booooooo!
No way! Don't throw the baby out with the bath water Jen! The things people do on Facebook can be annoying, but it really is so handy. I couldn't get rid of it...
it's ok, i think the world needs more wusses. people who don't pay for maniacs to get paid to share their twisted thought lives with the world.
moany is bad too!!!!
and that's very interesting, i didn't know that about you. i hope you know i don't think YOU'RE gross for having indoor cats, i just couldn't have them myself.
and thirdly, yes. exactly. shudder.
I am so with you on #4! I HATE movies on opening night....I love to go at weird times like weekday afternoons because I know no one will be there. I also particularly hate crowded bars and restaurants.
oh yeah. if we're ever out for coffee and the shop is too crowded, we pack it up and sit in the car. haha!
