it's good to keep busy. it's good to have projects and ideas and jobs, people to see and places to be at certain times. but you need a day here and there for getting lost with someone, walking down back alleys, drinking cold things and talking about small, seemingly insignificant stuff.
barclay and i did this the other day. we explored a part of our neighbourhood we hadn't before. all of the crazy people were out, and the sun was out, and so, you know, we thought we should be too.
my favourite thing was when we followed the sound of a fuzzy radio right to a little old shop with stained glass in the windows and, obviously, poked our heads inside. a man with a heavy accent looked up from where he was working, hunched over a large, shattered, stained glass window, and welcomed us warmly.
we visited for a bit and we asked him what he was doing and he proudly showed us his work. i suddenly felt like a five year-old, popping my head over the neighbour's fence and asking endless questions. but he was so friendly, so excited about his work, that i didn't feel bad about it. he even invited us over to his work bench and showed me how to cut glass.
we wandered around the shop for a while after that. he told us about a stained glass class he taught in the evenings for 25 bucks {for 18 hours of classes altogether...!} and i'm seriously thinking about it. because why not? i've been learning a thing or two lately about branching out, trying new things, meeting new people. it's good for you, i think. there are so many different kinds of people out there, did you know that? and if you only ever hang out with the ones you already know, you'll miss out on some really neat folks, and the really neat things they could teach you.
but that, you guys, is just my opinion.
have you tried something different lately? classes of some kind, or a club, or even just striking up conversation with an interesting-looking stranger, or whatever? i like hearing those kinds of stories.

Ah I've missed your blog. And I couldn't agree more with your opinion; how boring would life be if we only stuck to the same things/people? I know it seems "safer" that way because you're not out there taking risks, but then how would life ever be interesting if you never branched out? This is something I've learned lately :)
that second photo is amazing!
and those classes sound like an excellant idea.
1. Amazing story!
2. DO THE CLASS! I've been wishing there was a stained glass class around here for ages; let me live vicariously through you!
Brilliant! Just think if you hadn't gone for a wander you might never have found that guy & his colourful workshop! Would love to see your handy work if you do the class!
Stained glass is so much fun! My class at school got to make some as a project, and it's so awesome and neat. Take the class, you definitely won't regret it!
Glass art is so fascinating to me. I recently saw a Chihuly exhibit and it blew me away!
Oh gosh I love stained glass!
hannah debbie! are you debbiecutieface? your blog disappeared and i've been so confused!!! what's going on?
and from the sounds of the rest of you, the stained glass class is a very good idea! :) i'll think about it.
You should definitely definitely do that class! My town has a community center where they teach tons of different classes throughout the year and I really really really really really want to do a pot throwing class. Hmmm. Maybe I need to go look that up now. Thanks Suzy!!!
SO cool! Where is the shop? Was the stuff expensive?
justine: you know where tangerine is? {and if you don't, you need to let me know and i will tell you. everyone needs to know where tangerine is.} it's just east of there, a block or two, i think. i never actually noticed prices on anything, but the classes are diiiiirt cheap!
You should definitely take the class! I think that'd be SO interesting, and it's so fairly priced!
